Maddona was never so much ashamed in her life
Madonna has spoken of how she was told that she was unfit to raise children when she first attempted to adopt her daughter Mercy James in Malawi in 2009.
The iconic star was celebrating the opening of her new children’s surgery when she recalled how she’d had to endure an emotional three-year wait for the right to adopt the young girl that she’d promised to take care of.
Madonna had already taken on her son David in 2006, but the divorce from director Guy Ritchie in between each adoption meant that the judge ruled against her when it came to raising Mercy on her own as a single mother.Pink reveals that she's 'made amends' with Christina Aguilera
Speaking at the opening of her Mercy James Institute for Paediatric Surgery and Intensive Care in Malawi, Madonna opened up for the first time about the logistical difficulties and emotional challenges the divorce brought her when it came to adopting.
‘I met Mercy soon after I met my son David, but they were living in different orphanages,’ she said.
‘Mercy was suffering from malaria, and David from pneumonia. And when I held each of them in my arms, I whispered in their ears, that I would look after them. And I promised them that they would grow up into strong and healthy adults,’ she recalled.Real Housewives star Joanna Krupa finalizes her divorce from Romain Zago
But despite her best intentions, Madonna later found that the end of her marriage lead to the unexpected rejection for her application to adopt.
‘I was granted permission to adopt David first. And some time later, I filed a petition to adopt Mercy. But this time, the judge who was presiding said no.’
Explaining the uncomfortable reasons for the judge’s decision, she went on: ‘I was recently divorced and she informed me, as a divorced woman, I was not fit to raise children and that Mercy James was better off growing up in an orphanage.’Katy Perry pushes back Witness tour dates, reveals opening acts
The shock verdict left her family reeling, but Madonna’s strong-willed nature meant that she was never going to accept it as her final answer.
‘If you know me, you can imagine how I received this information,’ she said. ‘It’s true, I am a freedom fighter. I am a feminist. I am a rebel heart. But I am also a compassionate and intelligent human being.
