The global climate agreement was signed by nearly 200 countries in December 2015 in an effort to combat global warming and help poorer countries adapt to an already-changed planet.

Mr Macron in turn issued a series of provocative statements against the US decision to renege on the commitment to the deal, including inviting American scientists to continue their work in France and highlighting a climate alliance with China.

But speaking at a press conference in Paris this evening, the pair revealed they had held discussions about the deal and whether the US would ever rejoin.

He appeared to leave the matter open-ended, adding: "We'll see what happens".
