Beloved Broadway star Barbara Cook has died.

According to Variety, the theater and cabaret legend's son Adam LeGrant confirmed his mother's passing, revealing that she died in Manhattan in the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017. In her last moments, she was reportedly surrounded by family and friends before succumbing to respiratory failure, the Chicago Tribune reports.

She was 89 years old.

Cook gained fame after starring in Broadway's Candide in 1956. She later acted in the original production of The Music Man in 1957, for which she won a Tony award.

The New York Post notes that Cook's Broadway career ended in the 1970s, after the singer and actress struggled with depression and alcoholism. However, she was able to return to the spotlight a decade later in Stephen Sondheim's Follies.

Cook also recorded a number of albums, including Barbara Cook's Broadway, Barbara Cook at the Met, and Mostly Sondheim: Live at Carnegie Hall.
